Jerusalem is a city packed with intense history and religious significance. People come from all over the world to witness the holy sites that are accessible throughout the city. Both modern and historic, you will have the opportunity to engage with many different global perspectives, all within the city limits. With vibrant marketplaces, and a modern downtown, Jerusalem has it all!

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem offers easy access to the city, as well as countless opportunities to engage with the student population. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem provides in-depth education both inside and outside of the classroom through a diverse set of lectures, cultural and religious organizations, as well as networking conferences.

Academics

Academic Program

At The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, you can enroll in courses taught in English, with the exception of language courses.  However, if you can read, understand, speak, and write Hebrew fluently, you may also have the option of taking some courses in the regular university program.

Course Descriptions and Syllabi

As a participant on this program, you will be required to participate in the Pre-Semester Program. 

FALL PRE-SEMESTER PROGRAM
During the Fall Pre-Semester Program, you can select a language or single elective course. You can also elect to hold a volunteer position or internship in Fall, which begins in the pre-semester.

Language
You can choose between Practical Hebrew for Beginners (4 credits) or Modern Standard Arabic for Beginners (5 credits).  

Electives
One City—Many Religions, Dr. Hanan Gafni (3 credits)
Jerusalem's glory rests not only in the archeological sites and ancient monuments of the past, but also in the multiple dynamic religious groups that flourish in beautiful Jerusalem today, whether Jewish, Christian, Islamic or other origin. In this unique course, we tour the city, meet representatives of these religious groups, visit their communities and thus understand the complex but also amazing fabric of this exquisite city.

Jerusalem: A Journey through Time and Space, Mr. Abraham Silver (3 credits)
By the Middle Ages, maps of the world portrayed Jerusalem as the center of the world. How did that happen? Living in Jerusalem means having the opportunity to explore this magnificent city. Through classroom study and field trips, we will go on a journey of Jerusalem, through time and space. You will come to understand and appreciate its present and future, how the city developed and how the city holds meaning for everyone in the world today.

During the semester, you can take elective courses in the following diverse areas:
• Jewish Civilization, Religion and History
• Middle East and Islamic Studies
• Political Science and International Relations
• Israel Studies: History, Politics, Society and Culture
• Psychology and Cognitive Sciences
• Conflict and Security Studies

General Education Information for UAlbany Students

Credits earned on this program will automatically satisfy the International Perspectives requirement. Three credits of foreign language study will satisfy the Foreign Language requirement. No additional approval is required for you to earn these general elective credits.

Major/Minor Information for UAlbany Students

Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, upon approval by the department.

Transcript

All courses taken abroad count towards UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript. You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary.

Accommodations

Housing

Student housing complexes are located on Mount Scopus, overlooking Jerusalem, and are within walking distance of the university. From this location, you can take advantage of being close to the university while experiencing city life.
If you choose to live on campus, you will most likely be housed in the in the Student Village complex. Each single occupancy bedroom is in an air-conditioned suite. Each bedroom contains a bed, desk, chair, and closet. Kitchen and bathroom facilities are shared. The Scopus Student Village housing complex has free Wi-Fi in all of its apartments. 
If rooms are unavailable in the Scopus Student Village, you will be housed in one of the other university housing facilities. RIS administration reserves all rights to make final housing decisions.
Kitchens have stove burners and refrigerators, so you can prepare light meals and snacks. 

Meals

There is no meal plan for this program. You may choose to purchase meals in the cafeteria, cook, or eat out at local restaurants. There are moderately priced kosher cafeterias, snack bars, and small supermarkets located in or near each student housing complex.

Eligibility

Academic Requirements

ONLY SUNY STUDENTS MAY APPLY FOR THIS PROGRAM. ALL SUNY APPLICANTS MUST APPLY THROUGH UALBANY IN ORDER TO RECEIVE SUNY CREDIT FOR THIS PROGRAM.
Juniors, seniors and exceptional sophomores in all majors with at least a 3.0 GPA are welcome to apply. If you have a lower GPA, you should consult with the study abroad program coordinator.
If you are interested in apply to The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, you should follow two steps:
1) Click "Apply Now'' at the top of this page in order to access the UAlbany application materials.
2) Apply directly to The Hebrew University of Jerusalem for admission, following their procedures and observing their deadlines, and inform the University at Albany once you have submitted your Hebrew University of Jerusalem application materials.  Please do not send The Hebrew University of Jerusalem's application materials to the University at Albany.

Excursions

Experiential Learning

University-arranged excursions are not included in this program, but you will have access to multiple tourist attractions off campus during your free time.

Student Clubs and Organizations

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Office of Student Life (OSL) designs extracurricular programs to introduce you to the land of Israel on a personal level – its people, food, geography, culture, and politics. Many exciting events, tours, and activities will complement your academic program and allow you to see Israel from new angles. All tours leave from the campus and include transportation, a tour guide certified by the Ministry of Tourism, a security guard, and a madrich (student life staff and guide) from the Rothberg International School.

Funding Opportunities

Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

About the City

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s main campus (Mount Scopus campus) is located in the northeastern part of Jerusalem. Jerusalem is located between the Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. It is one of the oldest cities in the world.
In Jerusalem, you can enjoy vibrant architecture, food, and street life while walking through the historic neighborhoods. Jerusalem has an East meets West feel, and Judaism, Christianity, and Islam thrive.

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required to participate in this program. If you are a U.S. citizen, you are required to obtain a visa to enter Israel.
For all other nationalities, please check with your government and the Consulate General of Israel website to determine whether you are required to obtain a visa for this program.

Overview

About the Program

The University at Albany's program through The Hebrew University of Jerusalem offers you the opportunity to take courses in Judaic, Israeli, or Middle Eastern studies, Hebrew language, and general studies. Israel, as a center for several cultures and religions, provides a stimulating environment for personal growth, both inside and outside the classroom. While it is an obvious resource for Judaic Studies majors and minors, this program also attracts students from all academic disciplines, religions, and ethnic groups.

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted in April, before the end of Spring UAlbany classes, and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

Support Services

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
The Hebrew University of Jerusalem's International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter in while abroad.
