Academic Program
The University of Galway International Summer School offers you a range of courses in Irish Studies, Irish Language and Archaeology. The courses aim to give you a rich and diverse perspective of the subject area and are taught by lecturers and education professionals who have a vast range of knowledge of their subject matter.
Irish Studies (6 credits)
Irish studies looks at the diversity of “Irishness” through literature, culture, history and language. This program gives a comprehensive introduction to the area, taking elements from all the contributing disciplines and providing a series of complementary integral educational field trips. *Irish Language (6 credits)
The University of Galway offers you the opportunity learn Irish in its natural environment. A range of Irish-language courses are offered at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels. Each course includes intensive spoken Irish each day, special classes in singing and dancing, and lectures in English on relevant topics including Irish History, Literature, Folklore and Society. Ecology (6 credits)
Ecology: Living Landscapes in the West of Ireland - this exciting course offers students practical experience of the natural environment in the west of Ireland. General Education Information for UAlbany Students
Credits earned on this program will automatically satisfy the International Perspectives requirement. Three credits of foreign language study will satisfy the Foreign Language requirement. No additional approval is required for you to earn these general elective credits.
Major/Minor Information for UAlbany Students
Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, upon approval by the department.

Academic Requirements
Irish Studies
A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum of two full years at the college level is required. You must be in good academic standing and show an interest in the overall program content. If your GPA is below the level indicated, consult with us about whether or not you should apply.

Ecology
A minimum GPA of 3.0 and a minimum one full year at the college level is required. Must be taking some form of Ecology, Environmental Science, Geography, Natural history, courses in your studies. 'Reasonable level of fitness' is encouraged due to required short hikes and uneven terrain.
Business and International Management

Achill Archaeological Field School (3-9 credits)

Experiential Learning

Irish Studies:
Field trips are an integral part of the program. You will participate on field trips to Dingle and the Aran Islands.
If you take the SS115 – Representing Ireland – Literature and Film course, you will visit Coole Park, Thoor Ballylee and Kilmacduagh.
If you take the SS116 – The Archaeological Heritage of Ireland course, you will visit sites in the Burren.
If you take the SS118 – Introduction to Art in Ireland, you will visit the Book of Kells and the National Museum in Dublin.
*Irish Language
Excursion and visits are arranged for you to visit several Irish-speaking locations to experience language and culture in their natural environment. Towns and villages that are visited include Ros a’Mhil, Ros Muc and An Spideal, with its local specialized craft. This course will include receptions and evenings of traditional Irish entertainment for you.
Achill Archaeological Field School
If you are attending session 1, you will be undertaking a fifth season at the pre-Famine settlement at Keem Bay. If you are attending session 2, you will be investigating the deserted early modern coastal settlement of Caruan Point. |

Funding Opportunities
Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

About the Program

Program Orientations
Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted the Saturday before the end of Spring UAlbany classes and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at the University of Galway, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
