Academic Program

The University of Glasgow offers a wide range of unique courses. Participants are eligible to enroll in regular university classes with degree seeking students. Whether you are studying Anatomy, English literature or cultural studies, Glasgow offers almost every major for endless opportunities for students. You can participate for a single semester or the entire academic year. You are expected to register for a full-time load, which typically is 60 Hull credits per semester.
There is a lot of focus on independent study. Some classes have few contact hours and less assessment that what you may be use to but if you need help student learning service will be sure to assist you!

Course Descriptions and Syllabi

You should think carefully about your class choices. You can take Level 1 and 2 classes as they require no/little previous experience. Level 3 and 4 classes are upper level classes that require you to have at least two years of experience in that subject. If you majoring in the subject area to be admitted to level 3 or 4.
You cannot take courses in Medicine, Vet Medicine, and Dentistry. If you are going abroad in the Fall, you cannot take level 3 or 4 courses in Computing Science, Math, or Stats classes.

General Education Information for UAlbany Students

Credits earned on this program will automatically satisfy the International Perspectives requirement. Three credits of foreign language study will satisfy the Foreign Language requirement. No additional approval is required for you to earn these general elective credits.

Major/Minor Information for UAlbany Students

Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, upon approval by the department.

Transcript

All courses taken abroad count towards UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript. You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary. 

Housing

The University of Glasgow offers a variety of housing options: residence halls, student houses and self-contained flats. Great efforts are made to ensure that students are housed within the University accommodations. Private accommodations are also available. The University's Accommodation Office will be able to help you find appropriate housing. Once accepted by Glasgow, you will receive housing information and instructions to apply on line.

Meals

If you live on campus, it is important to note that there is no meal plan. Your Residence Hall/Apartment will have a kitchen for you to cook your meals.

Academic Requirements

Junior and Senior students are eligible to participate. Applications are welcome from students in all majors. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 is required. If your GPA is below the level indicated, consult with us about whether or not you should apply.

Experiential Learning

Become a member of the University unions, council, clubs or media. This is a great way to discover what you’re good at. Pursue your passions, meet like-minded people and boost your employability. There are more than 100 students-run clubs and societies for you to choose from. Join something!
University-arranged excursions are not included in this program, but you will have access to unlimited tourist attractions and events off campus.

Funding Opportunities

Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required to participate in this program. U.S. citizens: If you are going to the United Kingdom to study for 6 months or less, you will get a Short-term Study visa. If you are going to the United Kingdom to study for more than 6 months, you will have to obtain a Tier 4 (General) visa. More information regarding the visa application process is available upon acceptance to the program.

About the Program

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted the Saturday before the end of Spring UAlbany classes and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at University of Glasgow, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
