Academic Program
Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) is located in the heart of Korea’s capital, Seoul. YISS offers a wide range of courses for students from the arts to technology. YISS also offers internship opportunities for students either in global companies or research lab experiences.
Course Descriptions and Syllabi
YISS offers a 4- or 6-week summer program as well an internship option. You can find BOTH the 4-Week and 6-Week Program courses offered as well as the syllabi here. You have the following options to choose from:
- 4-Week Program, 1 course (3 credits)
- 4-Week Program, 2 courses (6 credits)
- 6-Week Program, 1 course (3 credits)
- 6-Week Program, 2 courses (6 credits)
- 6-Week Program, 3 courses (9 credits)
- 7.5-Week Program, 1 course + INTERNSHIP Program (5 credits)
- 7.5-Week Program, 2 courses + INTERNSHIP Program (8 credits)
YISS Internship Program
In addition to classroom learning, YISS also offers a 2 credit internship program (graded pass/fail). You can either do a Corporate Internship or a Research Internship that begins in mid-June. This internship begins about 1.5 weeks EARLIER than the YISS program. After completing 1.5 weeks of the internship, you will then either take 1 or 2 courses of the YISS 6-Week Program that begins at the end of June AND continue the internship simultaneously. The internship continues until the end of the 6-week YISS program (when academic courses complete) which is at the beginning of August. Internship placements are not guaranteed, but you may replace the 2-credit internship with a 3-credit course if you do not get an internship.
- If you would like to do an internship, please contact Megumi Kim, the Korea Program Advisor at mtkim@albany.edu by Friday, February 14, 2025 so that you can apply by Yonsei’s internship program application deadline of Thursday, March 13, 2025.
Course equivalency information for UAlbany Students
Credits earned on this program may be approved to satisfy the World History/International Perspectives or other UAlbany General Education requirements, if you earn appropriate credit in these areas and receive approval using the General Education Substitution Request form.
Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, with approval by the associated academic department(s). You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary.
All courses successfully completed through this program abroad that are not assigned a specific UAlbany course equivalency will at least count as UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript.

Housing
- On-campus housing at Yonsei University is not guaranteed. Yonsei offers suggestions on alternative off-campus options OR you may arrange your own off-campus housing.
- If planning to participate in the 7.5-Week Internship Program, you will need to arrive about 1.5 weeks earlier (mid-June) than the official YISS program start date (end of June). There will be NO on-campus housing during these first 1.5 weeks of the internship program. You must find off-campus housing during this time. If you are accepted to the on-campus housing in advance, once the YISS program begins (end of June), you would then be able to move into the on-campus housing with the other students.
- The two on-campus housing facilities available are the SK Global House and the International House. Both dormitories are located within walking distance to the Yonsei University campus.
- The SK Global House is for both men and women and have single and double occupancy dorms.
- The International House only has double occupancy dorms for women with shared bathrooms.
Meals
No meal plan is provided with any of the housing options. You may choose to purchase meals in the cafeteria, cook, or eat out at local restaurants.

Eligibility |
Academic Requirements
Sophomores, juniors, and seniors in all majors, with at least a 2.0 GPA, are eligible to apply. The GPA requirement is very strict.
Korean citizens are also eligible to apply.
No previous Korean language study is required.

Extracurricular Activities
There may be several university-arranged activities with an additional fee. Possible extracurricular activities may include:
- Seoul City Tour
- K-Pop dance class
- Cooking class
- Taekwondo class
- DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) Tour
- Lotte World
You will also have access to several tourist attractions and events off campus.

Scholarships |
Funding Opportunities
Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

About the City
Yonsei University’s main campus is in a spacious, picturesque and natural setting, located minutes away from the economic, political, and cultural centers of Seoul’s metropolitan downtown area. Seoul is one of the leading and rising global cities in the world. It is also home to five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and offers many temples and other cultural attractions.
Yonsei University has 3,500 eminent faculty members who are conducting cutting-edge research across all academic disciplines. There are 21 graduate schools, 22 colleges and 131 subsidiary institutions hosting a selective pool of students from around the world.
Travel Documents
A valid passport is required to participate in this program. If you are a U.S. citizen, you are not required to obtain a visa in order to participate in this program.
For all other nationalities, please check with your government and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea website to determine whether you are required to obtain a visa for this program.

About the Program
The University at Albany’s exchange affiliation with Yonsei International Summer School (YISS) enables you to study for several weeks at one of the most prestigious universities in Korea: Yonsei University. The program has recently been revamped to highlight international students' growing interests in the arts, culture, and humanities while also offering cutting-edge classes in management and economics, global issues, history and social sciences, and science and technology. You can experience Korean culture and participate in a variety of activities and events outside the classroom including field trips, Korean lessons, and cultural immersion programs. You are sure to make lifelong friends, build your networks, and expand and deepen your academic and cultural horizons, all while experiencing life in Seoul, one of Asia's coolest, yet largely undiscovered cities.
Program Orientations
Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted in late March/early April, and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at Yonsei University, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by the International Office of your host university.
Support Services
UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
Yonsei University's International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter in while abroad.
