Program Description:
Holland has a large population of international students so you won’t feel alone. In fact, 1 in 10 students is an international student. Why? Because Holland has excellent, affordable higher education. What’s more, the Dutch are open-minded and almost everyone speaks English.
The lovely university town of Nijmegen has a great atmosphere. Just wander through its beautiful old streets and you feel its rich history. Looking for a charming pub or restaurant, a bit of culture or a great night out? Nijmegen has all this and more. Keen on sport or nature?
Nijmegen has loads of sports clubs and is surrounded by beautiful forests full of hiking and bicycle trails.

 

Our exchange affiliation with HAN University of Applied Sciences enables students to study at a Dutch university that stands out for its practical approach. This option is intended for U.S. students interested pursing in-depth, hands-on study select subjects areas.  HAN University is situated in the east of the Netherlands, on two distinct campuses (Arnhem and Nijmegen) about 1.5 hours drive from Amsterdam. This program is a three week, 3-SUNY credit program where students take one class per week in a variety of disciplines.

Academics

Academic Program

The HAN Summer School offers a three-week, three class program where you take one class per week. Each class is worth 1 SUNY credit resulting in a total of 3 SUNY credits for the 3 week program.
Your classes are from Monday to Friday and include at least 1 field trip per week. The weekends are yours! Discover Nijmegen, with its beautiful surroundings, the Netherlands or other parts of Europe on your own. It is up to you!
There are various courses to choose from in the fields of health, education, social work and sport. Each course runs for 1 week.

Course options
Week 1 (June 16th -June 20th):
Education for All
How can we address exclusion in education because of disability, social challenges or communication issues? This course considers barriers to learning and will look at strategies to challenge these. The course will consider and evaluate options for creating more empowering and more inclusive learning environments.

Sports Nutrition
Develop a practical and personalized sports nutrition plan by analyzing your diet, estimating your total energy expenditure and assessing the physiological demands of your physical exercise, and compare it to established guidelines to optimize your health and performance.

Empowering Innovation Through Technology
Exploring the potential of technologies such as advanced devices, virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI), and artificial general intelligence (AGI) within the healthcare, social, and educational domains.

Week 2 (June 23rd – June 27th)
Global Awareness in a Local Context
Learn about global philosophies and develop intercultural and creative skills in order to make a positive impact in your own local community.

Arts Therapies & Psychological Coaching
Curious about applying elements of Art, Movement & Psychology in daily life? In this course you learn how to address certain issues (personal and/or social) by using psychological coaching and Arts Therapies. You will be introduced to art, drama, music and psychomotor therapy in a very practical, hands-on way.

Global Citizenship in Education
How to open windows on the world and make school a training area for global understanding.

Week 3 (June 30th – July 4th)
How to use Creativity
Interested in how to use creative activities to achieve social goals? Experience how creativity can be very valuable in conversations with clients. 

Challenges in Healthcare: the Dutch Approach
Gain understanding on current healthcare, social and ethical issues from different cultural perspectives.

Sports & Talent
How to improve talent identification and development programs in (semi-) professional sports


Course equivalency information for UAlbany Students

Credits earned on this program may be approved to satisfy the World History/International Perspectives or other UAlbany General Education requirements, if you earn appropriate credit in these areas and receive approval using the General Education Substitution Request form

Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, with approval by the associated academic department(s). You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary. 

All courses successfully completed through this program abroad that are not assigned a specific UAlbany course equivalency will at least count as UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript.

 

Accommodations

Housing

The housing accommodation for the program is at the Groesbeek Resort in Nijmegen. Housing is included in the program cost, and you will work with HAN to book your accommodations.
You will stay in a suite with 5 to 6 other students, and have a shared double room with another student. You are welcome to use the many amenities that the resort has to offer, including the pool and the spa.
Laundry is not included in the program charge, but you are welcome to use the washer/dryer for an additional fee.
Transportation from accommodation to school is provided by HAN.

Meals

There is no meal plan for the program, however, the suites are self-catered, meaning you will have sufficient facilities to prepare your own food.

Eligibility

Academic Requirements

This program is open to all SUNY students Freshman through Seniorwith a GPA of 2.5 or higher.If your GPA is just below the minimum, please ask your study abroad advisor for clarification.
Students from all fields of study are welcome to apply for the program, but please be sure to check course prerequisites to see if you are eligible for your preferred courses.

About the City

Nijmegen has a population of around 170,000. The city is large enough to offer all the facilities you could wish for. At the same time, it has quite a relaxed feel to it.
Over 40,000 students study in Nijmegen. So there is a large offering of interesting cultural events and festivals. Film, music, literature, dance, stand-up comedy: you can find it all in Nijmegen!

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required to participate in this program. A student visa is generally not required for U.S. citizens studying in the Netherlands for under 90 days. If you do not have U.S. citizenship, you may need a visa.
*If the ETIAS system is launched and running, you may need to complete the registration. Your study abroad advisor and your host institution will advise you on the process as more information is released.

Overview

About the Program

HAN University of Applied Sciences is one of the 5 largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands.
HAN offers high-quality, practice-based education to more than 30,000 students. HAN’s centers of expertise provide tailored research to companies and institutions.
HAN’s courses are spread across 2 campuses, each with a separate profile. The Arnhem campus mainly has programs in the technical and economic arena. Nijmegen’s profile is mostly in the fields of health, sport, behavior and society, and education. Both campuses offer a wide range of economic courses and primary school teacher education. They also both have an international profile.

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The summer pre-departure orientation will be conducted towards the end of April/early May.
Upon arrival at HAN, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

 

Support Services

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
HAN’s International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter in while abroad.
