Program Information

FIE is committed to maintaining the highest possible standards in teaching and study facilities. FIE's primary study center, Foundation House, is located in the center of London on Cromwell Roadone of London's main arteries leading into the heart of the city. Foundation house is equipped with updated classrooms, a student common room, meeting rooms, and administrative offices for staff. Library access is permitted at Birkbeck College, Kensington Public Library and Online Britannica. All academic and housing facilities feature wireless internet access.

 

Requirements

Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are eligible to apply. A 3.0 GPA is required however students with a lower GPA may be considered. Students should have a strong interest in the curriculum offered and a particular interest in doing either an internship, service learning experience or independent  research or study.

 

Academics

For the summer program, FIE offers both a 10 and 8-week option,  UAlbany only supports the 10-week option. 

10-week program consits of Internship and  Key Course for a total of 9 credits:

  • Three days/week internships with class meetings throughout the term.
  • British Life  & Cultures (FIE's "Key Course") is mandatory and is taken along with the internship placement.

Support Services

All students studying abroad should attend the pre-departure session at UAlbany prior to your time abroad. UK participants also have an additional pre-departure session at UAlbany. 

FIE Classroom

FIE London also provides on-site support. Experienced residential and student life staff based in the Foundation House work together to support students in fully utilizing the historical, cultural, social and political resources of London in their out-of-class time. 

Their work includes:

  • Coordinating a comprehensive orientation for all students upon arrival.
  • Organizing and leading a variety of extra-curricular events.
  • Keeping students informed about unique events happening in London.
  • Offering help and advice on a wide range of issues.
FIE staffs Resident Assistants in each residence hall providing support for any problems encountered and knowledge of the surrounding area to new students. Assistance by reception staff is also available 24/7.


Housing

FIE offers student accommodation in Kensington, a short walk from the Foundation House Study Center and situated in a lovely and very safe neighborhood. Parks and gorgeously appointed homes are characteristic of this part of the city and are a welcome retreat from the busy city center.

All bedrooms are full furnished with twin beds, desks and dressers. The majority of rooms are doubles with a few singles, triples and quadruples. Common living areas in each residence allow students to interact with others in the program. Kitchens are fully equipped with cookware, silverware and dishes. Coin operated laundry facilities are available.

In a city of almost seven million people, it is hard to imagine that anyone would not be intellectually stimulated by the cultural diversity of this metropolis. London boasts a fine tradition of art and literature, a bustling commercial center, and a population from the far reaches of the globe. Today, visitors to London experience a blending of British culture and the cultures of former colonies such as India, Nigeria, and Malaysia, to name just a few.
