Program Description:
 
Within the tree-lined streets of Shanghai you will find everything from charming cafes and late night markets, to bustling business officials. Shanghai is home to many cultural festivals, such as a hot pot festival and an international tea festival, giving you firsthand access to cultural events. From the famous landmarks such as the oriental pearl tower and the historic Yu Garden, to the world famous food like dumplings and fresh local seafood, there is no doubt that Shanghai will have what you are looking for.

While at East China Normal University, take advantage of the Liwa River that passes through the campus, leaving rocky gardens, bridges, willow trees, and pagodas in its path. This University has 110 student-run organizations, multiple dining halls, eateries and access to public transportation to the rest of the city.

Academics

Academic Program

East China Normal University offers a wide range of courses for undergraduate students. Prior knowledge of Chinese is recommended but not required.
If you have little to no background knowledge in Chinese, you have the option of taking Chinese language and related courses that are designed for international students at different levels. A placement test is administered to all international students who plan to take Chinese language classes before registering for classes, except for those with no language background in Chinese.
If you are fluent in Chinese, you can enroll in the regular university courses that are taught in Chinese. ECNU offers 55 undergraduate programs.

Course Descriptions and Syllabi

ECNU offers a variety of Chinese and English-taught courses.  The Global China Program provides an excellent opportunity for you to learn about China through academic and cultural immersion. The program consists of two parts:

  1. Chinese Language course and English-taught content courses on China Studies and other fields
  2. Internship

General Education Information for UAlbany Students

Credits earned on this program will automatically satisfy the International Perspectives requirement. Three credits of foreign language study will satisfy the Foreign Language requirement. No additional approval is required for you to earn these general elective credits.

Major/Minor Information for UAlbany Students

Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, upon approval by the department.

Transcript

All courses taken abroad count towards UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript. You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary.

Accommodations

Housing

You will be housed in one of the international student dormitories during your time at East China Normal University. Single and double occupancy dorms are available. Each room has a bed, desk, air conditioner, internet access, and a shared laundry room. Some dorms include a shared kitchen.
You can also make your own housing arrangements off-campus.

Meals

There is no meal plan for this program. You may choose to purchase meals in the cafeteria, cook, or eat out at local restaurants.

Eligibility

Academic Requirements

Juniors, seniors and exceptional sophomores in all majors with at least a 2.5 GPA are welcome to apply. If you have a lower GPA, you should consult with the study abroad program coordinator about whether or not to apply.
You must be at least 18 years of age by the start of the program at East China Normal University. 
Prior knowledge of Chinese is recommended but not required.
If you are a Chinese citizen, you are not eligible to apply.
If you are a Taiwan or Hong Kong passport holder, you are eligible to apply.

Excursions

Experiential Learning

University-arranged excursions are not included in this program, but you may enjoy tourist attractions and events off campus, on your own.

Student Clubs and Organizations

There are several clubs and organizations that you can join at ECNU, and some of them will arrange field trips. Additional information will be provided at your on-site orientation at ECNU.

Funding Opportunities

Most financial aid and academic awards will apply to semester programs.
External scholarships, listed on our website, are a good way to partially fund your study abroad experience. In addition, the Center for International Education and Global Strategy offers two scholarship programs for UAlbany students studying abroad on UAlbany or 4-year SUNY programs.

East China Normal University is located in Shanghai, China’s largest city. Shanghai is located on China’s central coast, and is a global financial hub.
East China Normal University is one of the leading universities in China. It is a research university with an extensive range of disciplines including education, social science, humanities, nature science& technologies and administrative science. Each year, over 4,000 international students from countries across the globe arrive at ECNU to study. It is also one of the 10 national bases for teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required to participate in this program. If you are a U.S. citizen, you are required to obtain a visa to enter China. Please visit the Embassy of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States of America website for further information on X1 and X2 visas.
If you are not a U.S. citizen, please consult with your government to determine whether you will need to obtain a visa to enter China.

About the Program

Founded in Shanghai in October 1951, East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China. The University at Albany’s exchange affiliation with East China Normal University enables you to study Chinese language and culture, and is intended for students interested in developing Chinese language skills and pursuing in-depth study of subjects related to China.

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted the Saturday before the end of Spring UAlbany classes and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at East China Normal University, you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

Support Services

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
East China Normal University's International Office staff serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter in while abroad.
