Academic Program

The online Summer Asian Studies Program at Kansai Gaidai University focuses on teaching the Japanese language and Asian studies. You will NOT travel to Japan; this is an online, virtual program only.

Course Descriptions and Syllabi

Kansai Gaidai’s 5-credit online summer program allows you to take Japanese Language 1.

This Japanese Language 1 course is for beginners who have no formal training in the language. This course aims mainly at the development of speaking and listening skills, but also writing in hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. Approximately 300 vocabulary words will be introduced. At the end of the course, successful students will be able to function in Japanese in everyday situations such as making requests, stating reasons, describing things, etc. Also, approximately 40 kanji will be introduced. This course will cover Lessons 1 through 6 of Genki I, third edition.

Special features of the program
  • The Japanese Language 1 course will be composed of 45 lessons. 30 lessons are synchronous and 15 lessons are asynchronous.
  • The class time will be from Japan time, Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. For those who reside in New York, due to the time change, this would mean the Japanese Language 1 class would occur from Sunday - Thursday, 8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m
