Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) was founded in 1398 during the Joseon Dynasty in Korea, and it is the oldest university in East Asia. Today, SKKU boasts of two beautiful campuses - the Humanities and Social Sciences campus in Korea’s capital city, Seoul and the Natural Sciences campus in Suwon. Suwon is the largest city and capital of Gyeonggi Province, known as the “Silicon Valley” of Korea.

SKKU is consistently heralded by U.S. News and World Reports, the Shanghai Rankings, and many others as one of the top universities in Korea. Come explore the metropolis of Seoul and Suwon and experience firsthand the modern-day K-pop phenomenon and the rich cultural history the country offers!

Academic Program

Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) has two campuses: the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC) in Seoul and the Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) in Suwon, about an hour apart. During the Fall and Spring semesters, students can take classes at both campuses, with a free shuttle service availableSKKU offers a wide range of courses, and both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to study abroad.

  2. Click “Course Catalog” > “Undergraduate Major”
  3. Select:

You must take at least 12 SUNY credits at SKKU, and each SKKU course carries the same number of credits as it does at SUNY—for example, a 2-credit SKKU course equals 2 SUNY credits.

Unavailable Colleges & Departments 

The following departments are NOT AVAILABLE to undergraduate study abroad students:

  • The School of Medicine
  • The School of Pharmacy 
  • The School of Law

Restricted Colleges & Departments

The following departments are RESTRICTED to undergraduate study abroad students:

  • The College of Art - Theatre courses are not available. Most courses are taught in Korean, but courses in the Film, Television, and Multimedia major are an exception and may be offered in English.
  • Some courses in Global Business
  • Some courses in Global Economics
  • Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences 
Undergraduate Course equivalency information for UAlbany Students

Credits earned on this program may be approved to satisfy the World History/International Perspectives or other UAlbany General Education requirements, if you earn appropriate credit in these areas and receive approval using the General Education Substitution Request form found here: General Education Waivers, Substitutions & Appeals | University at Albany

Courses may also satisfy major and minor requirements, with approval by the associated academic department(s). You may file a request to have additional courses approved for equivalency as necessary. 

All courses successfully completed through this program abroad that are not assigned a specific UAlbany course equivalency will at least count as UAlbany General Elective credits. Credits and grades will appear on your UAlbany transcript.

This course equivalency information is NOT applicable to UAlbany GRADAUTE students.

Housing

  • On-campus dormitory housing at SKKU is not guaranteed and is very competitive to obtain.
  • You may also arrange your own off-campus housing. 
  • If you obtain SKKU on-campus housing, dormitory style housing (double room with one roommate) may be available at SKKU on both the Humanities and Social Sciences Campus (HSSC) in Seoul and at the Natural Sciences Campus (NSC) in Suwon. You will choose the campus to live on, but SKKU will assign your specific dormitory room.

Meals

  • There is no meal plan for this program if you choose to live on the HSSC campus in Seoul.
  • If you choose to live on the NSC campus in Suwon, there may be an optional meal plan available for an additional cost.
  • In all housing options, you may choose to purchase meals at the SKKU cafeterias, cook, or eat at local restaurants.

Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements

  • You MUST have completed 2 FULL semesters and have 2 semesters worth of college grades that are shown on your transcript in order to be eligible for the SKKU program. You will NOT be able to apply to this SKKU study abroad program if you are a freshman at the time of application. 
  • You must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in all majors, with at least a 2.5 GPA to apply. You will NOT be able to apply if your GPA is lower than a 2.5 (even if it's a 2.49).
  • If you are a transfer student, you must have completed at least 1 FULL semester at your previous institution, plus at least 1 FULL semester at the University at Albany, in order to apply.
  • Korean citizens are eligible to apply for this program.
  • SUNY students only: UAlbany or Other SUNY students are eligible to apply to this SKKU University program. 
  • GRADUATE STUDENTS: You must consult with your academic department before applying. Preference will be given to graduate students in the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at UAlbany. If more spots are available, UAlbany students will be given preference over other SUNY students. In all cases, academic performance will be considered.

University-arranged excursions are not included in this program, but you may enjoy tourist attractions and events off campus, on your own.

There are several SKKU student organizations on campus that are available for you to join. SKKU also arranges a Global Student Network: Help & Information Club (GSN HI-Club) for study abroad students where local SKKU students can help you acclimate to life in Korea.

About the City

SKKU’s Humanities and Social Sciences Campus is just minutes from Seoul’s economic, political, and cultural hubs. Overview

About the Program

The University at Albany’s exchange affiliation with Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Korea enables you to study in the heart of Seoul and in Suwon, the bedrock of innovation. This opportunity is intended for students interested in experiencing Korean daily life and culture while developing Korean language skills and pursuing coursework in English in diverse subject areas. 

Program Orientations

Upon acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation. During this time, you will have the opportunity to meet other program participants, discuss in-depth the details of your program, and prepare of the overall education abroad experience. The fall semester pre-departure orientation will be conducted the Saturday before the end of Spring UAlbany classes and in late November/early December for the spring term abroad.
Upon arrival at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), you will attend a mandatory program orientation. This is an important and informative set of sessions organized by International Office of your host university.

Support Services

UAlbany’s Office of Education Abroad staff assists you during the application process, in your preparation to travel abroad, and on-site if necessary.
Sungkyunkwan University's (SKKU) Office of International Affairs serve as an experienced resource for resolving issues that you may encounter while abroad.
