Soccer Nation: Social, Historical, and Cultural Impact of Soccer in Spain

Taught in English, this seminar is an immersion into Spanish culture and history by examining the development of soccer in Spain from the 1890s to the present. In this course you will discuss how the game of soccer impacts socioeconomic, religious, political, and cultural views in Spain. You will discover and analyze cultural trends and human behaviors influenced by soccer ideology and its effects on "pop culture." This course promotes critical thinking and encourages students to view literature, and film in a new light. you will analyze topics such as nationalism and globalization as you research the popularity and growth of soccer. Through in-class activities, research, assigned readings and interactive lectures, you will explore how soccer has embedded itself in Spain.
